HygroScope: Meteorosensitive Morphology
The project explores a novel mode of responsive architecture based on the combination of material inherent behaviour and computational morphogenesis. The dimensional instability of wood in relation to moisture content is employed to construct a climate responsive architectural morphology.
Suspended within a humidity controlled glass case the model opens and closes in response to climate changes with no need for any technical equipment or energy. Mere fluctuations in relative humidity trigger the silent changes of material-innate movement. The material structure itself is the machine.

Mercado de San Miguel, Madrid
Constructed entirely of Iron in 1916 as to duplicate the efficacy, appearance and style of ‘Les Halles’ in Paris; a beautiful and historic marketplace that was demolished and rebuilt in 1979 (with hideous results). Originally intended as a centre of commerce, the Mercado de San Miguel made any easy transition into its current existence as a gourmet food market as that had been the traditional purpose of the neighbouring square.
With the advent of faster consumption habits and the 1980’s led convenience of supermarkets, Mercado de San Miguel began to suffer. However a gastronomic group of locals formed a society “El Gastródomo de San Miguel” and bought the struggling market, taking it out of government hands and into those of private, passionate and culinary dexterity.
The result being a thriving all day market offering the freshest and best in local, regional and national produce. Open from 10:00am-10:00pm (often later on weekends) it is popular with the locals and tourists alike, offering all the take-away shopping options of a grand market, and all the comforts of eat-in modernity with its various tapas, wine bars and cafes.
